The Bottom, Saba

The Bottom

Description

The Bottom is the capital of Saba, set in a green bowl between the sea cliffs and the volcano at about two hundred metres. The Dutch name refers to that bowl rather than to any low ground, since the village sits well above the water. Government offices, the Sacred Heart church and the Saba University School of Medicine give the place more weight than its few hundred residents suggest. From the edge of the village the old Ladder drops in hundreds of stone steps to Ladder Bay, the landing where every barrel and every piano once came ashore. Fort Bay harbour lies below.
