San Cristóbal de las Casas (San Cristóbal) is a picturesque colonial city in the highlands of the Mexican state of Chiapas and an important cultural center of the region. Located at an altitude of around 2,100 meters, the city is known for its cobblestone streets, historic churches, colorful markets, and traditional handicrafts. Particularly distinctive is the vibrant culture of the Tzotzil and Tzeltal Maya, which remains deeply rooted in San Cristóbal and the surrounding Indigenous communities. The city combines colonial heritage with Maya traditions, art, and cultural diversity and serves as an ideal base for exploring the highland villages, Sumidero Canyon, jungle waterfalls, and the Lakes of Montebello.
