The Quirimbas Archipelago (Arquipélago das Quirimbas) stretches across some 30 islands along northern Mozambique’s coast, from Pemba to the Rovuma River on the Tanzanian border. This remote island world blends Swahili culture, Arab and Portuguese influences, and exceptionally rich marine life. Ibo Island forms the cultural heart of the archipelago, with historic colonial buildings and the imposing São João Baptista fortress. Coral reefs, mangroves, and clear waters shelter abundant fish, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, and dugongs. Diving, snorkeling, dhow excursions, island exploration, and birdwatching make the Quirimbas one of Mozambique’s most secluded and atmospheric destinations.
