Description
The Bazaruto Archipelago (Arquipélago de Bazaruto) is one of Mozambique’s best-known natural and travel destinations, lying off the coast of Inhambane Province. Its five islands, Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangué, are surrounded by turquoise lagoons, white sand dunes and rich coral reefs. The Bazaruto Archipelago National Park protects an exceptional marine environment home to dugongs, dolphins, humpback whales, manta rays, sea turtles and more than 2,000 fish species. Two Mile Reef is among the region’s best-known diving and snorkeling sites. Vilanculos is the main gateway to the archipelago, while traditional dhows, secluded beaches and Santa Carolina’s historic hotel ruins add to its distinctive character.
