Description
Gorongosa National Park (Parque Nacional da Gorongosa) is one of Mozambique’s most remarkable protected areas and a powerful symbol of African conservation success. After suffering devastating wildlife losses during the civil war, the park’s ecosystems have been gradually restored through strong protection, scientific research, and targeted reintroductions. Elephants, lions, buffalo, kudus, and large herds of waterbuck roam its expansive floodplains, while reintroduced African wild dogs add to its extraordinary wildlife. Lake Urema provides habitat for hippos, crocodiles, and an exceptional diversity of birdlife. Miombo woodlands, montane forests, limestone gorges, and waterfalls add striking variety to the landscape. Gorongosa combines wildlife conservation, research, and community development in a pioneering model for protecting nature.
