Description

Oudtshoorn is the heart of the Little Karoo and is widely known as the ostrich capital of the world. The town has been closely associated with ostrich farming since the 19th century and is renowned for its magnificent “feather palaces”, which reflect the wealth generated by the historic ostrich feather trade. Surrounded by the dramatic landscapes between the Swartberg and Outeniqua Mountains, Oudtshoorn combines historic architecture with the distinctive character of this semi-arid region. North of the town lie the famous Cango Caves, an extensive cave system featuring vast chambers, impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and spectacular limestone formations. Oudtshoorn is one of the highlights of Route 62 and a popular base for exploring the Little Karoo.
