Short description of Obock

Obock was the first capital of French Somaliland and has been slipping quietly back into the sand ever since the administration moved across the water. What is left is a scatter of colonial ruins, an old lighthouse and a long empty shore where turtles come up at Godoria. A ferry runs twice a week from the capital. The coast north of here toward Ras Siyan is superb for diving and birds but sits close to the Eritrean frontier, where travel is advised against and a permit is needed beyond the twelfth parallel. Almost nobody comes.
