Short description of Minsk
Minsk was flattened in the war and rebuilt from nothing as a Stalinist showpiece, which is why its main avenue runs for kilometres between matched neoclassical blocks and is the most complete ensemble of its kind anywhere. The scale of it is entirely deliberate and takes some adjusting to. A small reconstructed old town survives down by the river along with a baroque cathedral. The war museum here is the most visited museum in the whole country. Foreign bank cards do not work here at all, which catches out almost every single first time visitor.
