Short description of Khatyn
Khatyn was one of hundreds of Belarusian villages burned with its people inside during the occupation, and the memorial built on the site does not reconstruct it but marks where each house stood with a low concrete frame and a chimney carrying a bell. The bells ring out together across the clearing every thirty seconds. A cemetery of urns holds earth brought from the other destroyed villages. It is an open air site with no town around it and no facilities beyond the museum pavilion. Almost every Belarusian is brought here once during their school years.
