Magnetic Island (Yunbenun), affectionately known as “Maggie”, is a sun-drenched granite island off the coast of Townsville and a remarkable natural retreat in tropical North Queensland. The island is known for its sheltered bays, striking granite formations, eucalyptus woodlands and diverse wildlife, including koalas, rock wallabies and numerous bird species. Walking trails such as the Forts Walk lead through scenic landscapes to historic military fortifications and sweeping ocean views, while fringing coral reefs along the coast offer excellent opportunities for snorkelling and diving. Magnetic Island combines relaxed beaches, Australian wildlife and rewarding outdoor adventures, making it one of North Queensland’s most appealing island destinations.
