Short description of Longwood
Longwood is the windswept plateau in the east of Saint Helena where Napoleon spent his exile from 1815 until his death in 1821. Longwood House, where he lived with his small court, has been restored with its original rooms, garden and billiard table, and like his tomb in the nearby Sane Valley it belongs to France. The tomb has stood empty since his body was taken to Paris, but the willow-shaded grave is still visited by almost everyone who comes to the island. Deadwood Plain beside the village is the home of the wirebird, the island's only surviving endemic land bird, and a small golf course.
