Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha · Tristan da Cunha

Short description of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas

Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the only settlement on Tristan da Cunha and the most remote permanently inhabited place on earth, about 2,400 kilometres from Saint Helena and 2,800 from Cape Town. Just over two hundred islanders, sharing just a handful of surnames, live in cottages on a narrow green plain below the volcano and farm potatoes and fish for lobster. There is no airport. Fishing vessels and a polar research ship sail from Cape Town a few times a year, the crossing takes about a week, and landing by small boat depends on the swell. Visitors need permission from the island council, and expedition ships call for a day.
