Description
Lahore is the cultural capital of Pakistan and was the Mughal capital under Akbar and Jahangir, which is why the two things UNESCO listed here in 1981 sit at opposite ends of the city. The fort holds Jahangir's marble pavilions and the Sheesh Mahal of mirrored glass, and the Shalimar Gardens of 1642 step down through three terraces of channels and fountains. Facing the fort is the Badshahi Mosque of 1673, red sandstone for a hundred thousand worshippers. Wazir Khan Mosque inside the walled city is covered in tilework. The food streets run until dawn. The Wagah crossing to India is thirty kilometres east.
