Description
Harappa gave the Indus Valley civilisation the other name it goes by, and it was the first of its cities to be identified, though nobody understood what they had until Mohenjo-daro was dug fifty years later. The mound stood higher once. Contractors building the Lahore to Multan railway in the eighteen fifties carried away its baked brick for track ballast, which is why so much less survives here than in Sindh. What is left is a set of low mounds, a cemetery, a granary platform and a good site museum. Wheat fields run to the horizon.
