Karachi is the largest city in Pakistan and the port through which almost all of its trade passes, a fishing village of a few thousand when the British took it in 1839 and something over twenty million now. Jinnah is buried under a white marble dome at the centre, and the crowd that walks around it every evening is the closest thing the city has to a civic square.
