Description
Khustain Nuruu is a reserve of rolling steppe two hours west of Ulaanbaatar and the place the takhi came back to. The takhi, known abroad as “Przewalski's horse”, is the only horse never domesticated, and it was extinct in the wild by the sixties. Animals bred in European zoos were released here from 1992 and the herd now numbers in the hundreds, grazing loose across the hills. Red deer, marmots and wolves share the reserve. Turkic stone men and burial mounds from the sixth century stand on the grassland at Ungut nearby.
