Description
Kampong Thom (កំពង់ធំ) sits halfway along the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, on the banks of the Stung Sen, the largest of the eleven rivers feeding the Tonlé Sap. The town is officially named Stung Saen after that river, which is what most Cambodians call it, while travellers know it by the provincial name. It is a working provincial capital of some thirty thousand people rather than a sight in itself, and it earns its place as the base for the pre-Angkorian temple city of Sambor Prei Kuk thirty kilometres north. South of town the wooded cone of Phnom Santuk rises two hundred and seven metres above the plain, its summit reached by a long stairway and covered in Buddha figures cut into the living rock, with stone carvers still at work in the villages at its foot.
