Angkor
Cambodia · Siem Reap · 30 m
Description
Angkor (អង្គរ) was the capital of the Khmer empire from the ninth century to the fifteenth and covered, at its height, an area larger than any other preindustrial city on earth. What survives across some four hundred square kilometres is not only temples but the hydraulic works that made the city possible, reservoirs several kilometres long, canals, dykes and the roads between them. Angkor Wat, raised by Suryavarman II in the twelfth century as a temple to Vishnu and later his tomb, is the largest religious structure ever built and appears on the national flag. Angkor Thom, the walled city of Jayavarman VII, holds the Bayon with its towers of carved faces, and Ta Prohm has been left with the silk-cotton trees growing through its galleries. UNESCO inscribed the site in 1992 and passes are sold for one, three or seven days.
