Koh Rong Samloem, Cambodia

Koh Rong Samloem

Cambodia · Preah Sihanouk · 5 m

Description

Koh Rong Samloem (កោះរ៉ុងសន្លឹម) lies just south of Koh Rong and is the smaller and quieter of the pair, a wooded ridge of about nine square kilometres with no road across it and no mains electricity in most bays. Saracen Bay takes up much of the east coast, a two-kilometre arc of pale sand and shallow water where nearly all the resorts stand. A footpath crosses the island through jungle in under an hour to Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach on the western side, which face the open sea and take the evening light. M'Pai Bay in the north is the backpacker end, and a French colonial lighthouse still stands at the southern tip. The clear water off the island supports Cambodia's main dive schools and, after dark, some of the brightest bioluminescent plankton on the coast.
