Description
Kahuzi-Biega takes its name from the two extinct volcanoes that stand over it, and it is the only place where the eastern lowland gorilla can be tracked. That subspecies is the largest primate alive, and the silverbacks here are noticeably heavier than their mountain cousins. UNESCO listed the park in 1980. Trekking goes out from Tshivanga above Bukavu into bamboo and montane forest, and a group is usually reached within a few hours on foot. Trails also climb Mount Kahuzi at three thousand three hundred metres and pass through a peat bog on the way.
