Garamba National Park

Garamba lies in the far north on the South Sudanese border and is one of the oldest national parks in Africa, gazetted in 1938 and listed by UNESCO in 1980. Its landscape is long-grass savanna cut by gallery forest along the Garamba and Dungu rivers, quite unlike the rainforest of the rest of the country. The last Kordofan giraffes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo live here, along with elephants, buffalo in herds of hundreds, and hippo in the rivers. The park was famous for the northern white rhino until the population was lost. Four rivers cross the park and the Garamba gives it its name.
