Description
Jaluit ran the Marshall Islands for half a century before Majuro did. The Jaluit Company administered the group here on behalf of the German colonial government, and after the First World War the Japanese made it the seat of their administration in turn. Jabor is the population centre today, twelve hundred people with a small hotel and a few stores. The atoll is ninety one islands around a lagoon of six hundred and ninety square kilometres, and on Imiej the ruins of a Japanese power station, barracks, anti aircraft guns and a Shinto shrine still stand.
