Guanajuato is a colorful historic city in Mexico’s central highlands and one of the country’s most important cultural centers. The former silver-mining city is known for its brightly painted houses, winding alleys and plazas, colonial architecture, and extraordinary labyrinth of underground road tunnels. Its UNESCO-listed historic center combines a rich mining heritage with a vibrant student population, art, and culture. As the birthplace of painter Diego Rivera and host of the renowned International Cervantino Festival, Guanajuato is considered one of Mexico’s most atmospheric and culturally diverse cities.
