Dandenong Ranges
Australia · Victoria · 500 m
Description
The Dandenong Ranges are a lush mountain region on the outskirts of Melbourne and a popular retreat of cool forests, fern-filled gullies and charming villages. The region is known for its towering eucalyptus trees, colourful gardens and the historic Puffing Billy narrow-gauge steam railway, which winds through the forested hills. Villages such as Belgrave, Sassafras and Olinda combine country charm with cosy cafés, traditional Devonshire teas and small shops. Walking trails lead through dense forests that are home to the superb lyrebird, renowned for its remarkable ability to mimic sounds. Offering a refreshing contrast to nearby Melbourne, the Dandenong Ranges are one of Victoria’s classic day-trip destinations.
