Description
Trashigang is the largest town of eastern Bhutan and the end of the lateral road, a place of steep lanes above the Drangme Chhu where the country feels furthest from its western image. Its dzong hangs on a spur high over the river and served as the seat of the eastern governors. The district is home to the Brokpa, semi-nomadic yak herders of Merak and Sakteng who wear black yak-hair hats with spider-leg spouts to shed rain, and whose valleys opened to visitors only in 2010. Few visitors get this far east, and the drive from Paro takes the better part of a week.
