Description
Yeosu (여수) is a port on the south coast that rebuilt itself around the 2012 World Expo and now sells itself almost entirely on its night view. A maritime cable car crosses the strait to Dolsan Island with glass-floored cabins, and the lit Dolsan Bridge and the harbour below it are the fixed image of the city. Odongdo, joined to the mainland by a breakwater walk, is a small island of camellias that flower through the winter, with a lighthouse and a musical fountain. Hyangiram, a hermitage wedged into a cliff at the tip of Dolsan, is reached through a gap between rocks and looks straight east over the sea, which makes it a sunrise destination. Jinnamgwan, a vast wooden hall from 1599, was built as the naval headquarters after Yi Sun-sin's campaigns.
