Jeju, South Korea

Jeju

South Korea · 20 m

Description

Jeju (제주) is a volcanic island off the southern tip of the peninsula, built around Hallasan, at 1,947 metres the highest mountain in South Korea and a shield volcano with a crater lake at the top. UNESCO listed the island in 2007 for its geology, which includes the Geomunoreum lava tube system, Manjanggul among them, and Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone rising straight out of the sea that people climb before dawn. The coast alternates between black basalt columns, white shell beaches and low stone walls dividing the fields. Jeju's culture is distinct from the mainland's, with its own dialect, its grandfather stone statues and the haenyeo, women who free-dive for shellfish without air and whose knowledge UNESCO recognised in 2016. The Olle Trail now rings the whole island in twenty-seven numbered stages.
