Description
Weimar is a culturally significant city in the German state of Thuringia and one of the country's foremost centers of literature, art, and intellectual history. It is best known as the home of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller and as the birthplace of Weimar Classicism. Historic landmarks such as the Goethe and Schiller Houses, Belvedere Palace, and Goethe's Garden House in the Park on the Ilm form part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Classical Weimar. In 1919, the city gave its name to the Weimar Republic when Germany's new democratic constitution was adopted here. That same year, Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus in Weimar, launching a movement that profoundly influenced modern architecture, design, and art around the world.
