Neuschwanstein Castle is Germany's most famous fairytale castle and one of Europe's best-known landmarks. Perched high above the Pöllat Gorge near Füssen, the striking palace with its white towers and romantic architecture was commissioned by King Ludwig II in 1869. Although it resembles a medieval fortress, Neuschwanstein was built in the 19th century as an idealized vision of a knight's castle and remained unfinished after Ludwig's death. The castle gained worldwide fame as the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. The breathtaking view from Marienbrücke (Mary's Bridge), framed by the surrounding Alpine landscape, is one of Germany's most iconic panoramas, making Neuschwanstein one of the country's most visited and photographed landmarks.
