Description
Vevey lies on the northern shore of Lake Geneva between Lausanne and Montreux, at the foot of the Lavaux vineyard terraces. Charlie Chaplin spent the last twenty-five years of his life in the hills above the town, and his manor at Corsier-sur-Vevey is now Chaplin's World, where the house and a purpose-built studio hold his private rooms and film sets. On the waterfront a steel fork eight metres long stands upright in the lake, placed there for the Alimentarium, the food museum founded by Nestlé, whose headquarters have been in the town since 1866. The Grande Place carries one of the largest open markets in the region, and the old town behind it keeps its arcaded lanes. Once every twenty years or so the town stages the Fête des Vignerons, a winegrowers' festival recognised by UNESCO.
