Short description of Ureka
Ureka sits on Bioko's remote southern shore where a run of black sand beaches becomes one of the most important nesting grounds for sea turtles anywhere on the Gulf of Guinea coast. Leatherbacks and olive ridleys haul themselves out at night through the peak months, watched over by conservation patrols that keep the beaches dark and quiet. Rainforest presses right down to the sand behind them. The track in from Luba is rough and often completely impassable once the heavy rains begin, which closes the season just as firmly as the turtles' own calendar does.
