Description
Tufi sits on a headland above the only tropical fjords in the world, drowned valleys cut into volcanic rock where the walls fall straight into deep clear water and rainforest grows to the shoreline. The local name for them is rias. Villages along the inlets take visitors out in outrigger canoes, and the diving here covers both fringing reefs and the wrecks of the New Guinea campaign. Face tattooing is still practised by women of the Korafe. There is no road to Tufi, only a small airstrip on the cliff. Everything here is arranged through the single resort on the point.
