Description
Tongyeong (통영) is a harbour town on the south coast, set among the several hundred islands of Hallyeohaesang National Park. It was the naval headquarters from which Admiral Yi Sun-sin fought the Japanese in the 1590s, and Sebyeonggwan, the hall where his fleet was administered, still stands. The modern town is compact and steep. A cable car climbs Mireuksan for a view over the whole archipelago, a luge track runs down beside it, and Dongpirang, a hillside slum slated for demolition, was saved when artists covered its walls in murals. Gangguan harbour and Jungang Market sell the oysters and sea squirts the coast is built on, along with chungmu gimbap, plain rice rolls served with squid and radish on the side. Ferries run out to Somaemuldo and the other islands.
