Northern Mariana Islands
Short description of Tinian
Tinian lies a few kilometres south of Saipan and is reached by a short flight or by boat, a flat island of scrub, cattle pasture and one small town at San Jose. Its northern end holds North Field, the airfield from which the atomic bombers left for Japan, with the two loading pits set into the coral runway and the runways themselves half swallowed by bush. The House of Taga stands near the harbour, a row of latte stones cut larger than anywhere else in the Marianas. Taga Beach below it is a small cove with a cliff to jump from.
