Northern Mariana Islands
Short description of Saipan
Saipan is the main island of the Northern Marianas and the arrival point for almost every visitor, a long limestone island with a sheltered lagoon on its western side and cliffs facing the open Pacific on its eastern one. Garapan is its town, with a night market, hotels along Micro Beach and the American Memorial Park behind them. The Pacific war left the island covered in memorials, among them Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff and the Last Command Post. Divers come for the Grotto, a collapsed limestone cavern open to the sea. Managaha, a small islet in the lagoon, is the standard day trip.
