Description
Saxon Switzerland National Park protects the German section of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains southeast of Dresden and is one of Europe's most remarkable sandstone landscapes. Over millions of years, wind, water, and erosion have sculpted a dramatic terrain of towering sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, forested plateaus, and striking rock formations. Among the park's best-known natural landmarks are the Schrammsteine rock formations, the Großer Winterberg, and the Kuhstall, a massive natural sandstone arch. An extensive network of hiking trails leads to breathtaking viewpoints and through unspoiled forests that provide habitat for a rich diversity of wildlife and plant species. Together with the adjacent Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic, Saxon Switzerland forms a transboundary protected landscape of international significance.
