Short description of Ragusa
Ragusa is one of the great baroque towns of south-eastern Sicily, split between the upper town on the plateau and Ragusa Ibla on its own hill below. After the earthquake of 1693 Ibla was rebuilt in exuberant late baroque, and together with the other towns of the Val di Noto it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of San Giorgio rises above its square at the top of a sweep of steps, and the lanes lead on to the Giardino Ibleo with views over the valley. Ibla is also a setting of the television series Inspector Montalbano, and it is a fine base for Modica, Scicli, Noto and the beaches of Marina di Ragusa.
