Lake Como

Lake Como (Lago di Como) is a long, deep lake in Lombardy, shaped like an upside down Y and framed by steep, wooded mountains that rise straight from the water. Elegant villas with terraced gardens, small villages and a mild climate have made it one of the most celebrated lake landscapes in Europe since Roman times.

Bellagio, at the point where the three arms meet, is often called the pearl of the lake. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, Villa del Balbianello on a wooded headland near Lenno, Villa Melzi and Villa Monastero in Varenna are famous for their gardens and architecture. Boats and ferries are the best way to see the lake, linking Menaggio, Varenna, Bellagio and Cernobbio. Hiking paths such as the Greenway del Lago and the Sentiero del Viandante follow the shore, and Isola Comacina holds early medieval church ruins. Lake fish such as missoltini and polenta are local specialities, and swimming, sailing and kayaking are popular in summer.

Lake Como is reached by train from Milan to Como or Varenna in about an hour. Several days suit the lake, with stays in one of the central villages. Spring brings blossoming gardens, summer is the busiest season, and many villas and ferries operate on a reduced schedule in winter.
