Short description of Oristano
Oristano is the main town of west central Sardinia, once the capital of the medieval Giudicato of Arborea, whose judge Eleonora gave the island its code of laws. Its compact old centre gathers around Piazza Eleonora d'Arborea, the medieval Tower of Mariano II and the cathedral with its onion-domed bell tower. The Antiquarium Arborense displays finds from nearby Tharros. Every carnival the town stages the Sartiglia, a masked horse race in which riders aim at a hanging star. Oristano is a good base for the Sinis Peninsula, its quartz beaches and the Vernaccia wine of the surrounding plain.
