Short description of Montepulciano
Montepulciano is a Renaissance hill town in southern Tuscany, strung along a limestone ridge between the Val d'Orcia and the Val di Chiana. Its main street climbs past palaces by Sangallo the Elder and Vignola to Piazza Grande, where the Palazzo Comunale with its climbable tower faces the cathedral. Below the walls stands the Temple of San Biagio, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. The town gives its name to Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which ages in vaulted cellars carved beneath the palaces. On the last Sunday of August its districts race wine barrels uphill in the Bravìo delle Botti. Pienza and Montalcino lie close by.
