Short description of Marsala
Marsala lies on the western tip of Sicily and gave its name to the fortified wine made here since English merchants shipped it to Britain. Its historic cellars, above all Cantine Florio, open their vaults for tastings. The town grew from the ancient city of Lilybaeum, whose archaeological park displays the wreck of a Punic warship, and Garibaldi landed here to begin his campaign for Italian unity. North of town the salt pans of the Stagnone lagoon glow pink at sunset beside their windmills. A short boat ride leads to the island of Mozia with the ruins of a Phoenician city.
