New Caledonia · Loyalty Islands
Short description of Maré
Maré is the southernmost and wildest of the Loyalty Islands, a raised coral platform with cliffs on its windward side and white beaches on its lee. Yejele in the south is the beach it is known for, a long bay of pale sand with almost nobody on it. The Warrior's Leap is a gap in the cliffs where a legend says a man jumped to escape pursuit, and the natural aquarium at Medu is a clear basin among the rocks where fish gather. Customary land rules are taken seriously here, so access to a beach or a cave is asked for rather than assumed.
