Kerguelen

French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Short description of Kerguelen

Kerguelen is the largest of the French southern lands, a main island with three hundred satellites around it, cut everywhere by fjords and named the Desolation Islands by the navigator who found it. Port-aux-Français on the Gulf of Morbihan is the station and the only settlement, a scatter of huts and workshops at the end of a long bay. The Cook Ice Cap covers the western side. Reindeer left by an old experiment run wild inland, trout fill the rivers, and the Kerguelen cabbage that once saved sailors from scurvy still grows on the slopes.
