Short description of Crozet Islands

The Crozet Islands are the first landfall on the run south from Réunion and hold one of the great gatherings of birds anywhere. At the Baie du Marin on Île de la Possession, tens of thousands of king penguin pairs stand on the beach below the Alfred Faure station, which is staffed the year round by a few dozen people. Wandering albatrosses nest on the open slopes above. Elephant seals lie along the shore. Nobody lives here outside the station, landings need a permit from the territory, and the weather turns within the hour.
