Description
Jinhae (진해) is a naval port on the south coast that exists on the tourist map for about ten days a year. Around 360,000 cherry trees line its streets, and when they open at the end of March the Gunhangje festival brings well over a million people to a town of far fewer. Two spots carry the photographs. Yeojwacheon is, a narrow stream crossed by the small Romance Bridge and roofed over completely by blossom, and Gyeonghwa Station, a disused platform where the trees close over the rails in a tunnel. The festival is built around the navy, which opens the naval academy and its ships to visitors for the week, and the town keeps a memorial to Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Outside that window Jinhae is a quiet working port, and the hill park above it is worth the tower climb for the bay.
