Short description of Korean Demilitarized Zone
The Korean Demilitarized Zone (비무장지대) is the four kilometre wide strip that has separated North and South Korea since the armistice of 1953, and the most heavily fortified border on earth. On the southern side it is also one of the country's most visited day trips. Imjingak Park sits outside the checkpoint with its memorials to divided families, and a guided tour carries visitors past the barrier into the Civilian Control Zone. There a captured infiltration tunnel runs under the line, the Dora Observatory looks across at North Korean villages, and Dorasan Station waits on a railway that goes no further.
