Henderson Island

Pitcairn Islands

Short description of Henderson Island

Henderson Island is an uninhabited raised coral atoll about two hundred kilometres northeast of Pitcairn, one of the few atolls in the world left almost untouched by people and protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its limestone plateau is covered in dense scrub forest that is very hard to cross. Four land birds live nowhere else, among them the flightless Henderson rail and the Stephen's lorikeet, and green turtles nest on its beaches. Visitors land by boat at North Beach, either from an expedition cruise or on a trip with the Pitcairn islanders, who come here for timber. Nobody stays overnight, and landing depends on the swell.
