Short description of Adamstown
Adamstown is the only settlement of the Pitcairn Islands, home to around forty descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions, who burned the ship in Bounty Bay in 1790. There is no airport and no harbour for ships. Visitors come on the supply vessel from Mangareva in French Polynesia, a voyage of about thirty hours, and are carried ashore in the islanders' aluminium longboats. A short visit lasts a few nights until the ship returns. The Bounty's anchor stands in the square beside the church and its Bible is kept in the museum. Paths lead to Christian's Cave, the Down Rope petroglyphs and the St Paul's Point rock pool.
