Description
Eisenach is a historic town in western Thuringia and one of Germany’s most important centers of culture and history. It is best known for the Wartburg, a Romanesque castle and UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the town, where Martin Luther lived under the alias “Junker Jörg” in 1521–22 and translated the New Testament into German. Eisenach is also closely associated with Johann Sebastian Bach, whose birthplace now houses a museum dedicated to his life and work. Surrounded by the forested landscapes of the Thuringian Forest, the town combines a rich historical heritage with cultural attractions and excellent outdoor recreation, including access to the famous Rennsteig hiking trail.
