Description
Damyang (담양) is a rural county in South Jeolla built on bamboo. Juknokwon is a hillside plantation crossed by eight walking routes through groves dense enough to darken the path at midday, and the county museum next door explains what bamboo was used for before plastic. The other landmark is a two-kilometre avenue of metasequoia planted along an old road in the 1970s, now closed to cars and turning copper in late autumn. Gwanbangjerim is a much older piece of planting, a levee forest of hackberry and zelkova set along the river four centuries ago to hold the bank. Soswaewon, a small Confucian scholar's garden from the 1530s, is one of the few surviving private gardens of its period. Damyang eats tteokgalbi, minced short rib grilled on the bone, and rice steamed in a bamboo tube.
